The Confederate army began its retreat to Virginia in pouring rain while, at the same time, the great Confederate citadel at Vicksburg in Mississippi fell to Union forces. These double victories together were the fulcrum the Civil War turned on…but two more years of bloody fighting would still be required to end the conflict, but, to borrow a phrase from Churchill, it was (finally!) the end of the beginning.
